depends on how small your track is, give them plenty of time to scatter and do a normal warmup lap (if you dont run tire warmers) and you can get in some laps before you catch up. If you are catching them in a lap or two that should be the back markers and you should pass them easy. The real douchebags up front will take longer to catch and if it doesn't, you need to be in advanced.

So where do you place the mid-packers?
In with the newbies that are slow and nervous or with the fast guys that may be 5-10 seconds faster?

It's actually working REALLY well. Unless you're approved for Group 2, you don't get to sign up for Group2. It means, they play nice and learn the track THEN move up. We also have 30-minute sessions... with four hours a day and 20-people in 1.8 miles of track "traffic" doesn't happen often.
