WD40 is safe but gasoline will dry out your o-rings and cause them to crack.

i'm about to say something that is almost guanteed to make you change your minds..........I TOTALLY AGREE!!! I've also used WD40 or similar penetrating oils for years without any probs. I've tried chain cleaners and they work great but you can't buy them on Sun when you forgot to go to the bike shop...

Easiest place would be a paint supply store or HD, whichever is closer. I need to pick some up too.... I'm gonna soak and scrub the chain and sprockets this weekend.
