Neighbors said the seedy first-floor home of the family was like a small zoo with two pit bulls, a German shepherd, a parrot and a snake.
The family used to own a rabbit, but it was recently eaten by one of the dogs, neighbors said.
And the dog was supposedly caged all the time? No wonder it went nuts. I'll bet the shepherd wasn't particarly friendly either.

Ugh

Doesnt help that these dogs are kept in small appts and arent taken out much. Dogs like that def need room, plus in that area some are used by drug dealers as attack dogs.

Common misconception actually. PitBulls make GREAT apartment dogs, even small apartments. I used to live in a 14ft pop-out camper with a 60lb male Pit Bull. They key, of course, is to exercise them every day give lots of love, good foods, etc. etc. etc.

Dogs that live in cages definitely go crazy though.

From the description of the apartment, she was practically an animal hoarder.
No way she was taking proper care of them (the kids or the animals).

Damn shame for the kid, though. :(

Absolutely. One of my best friends has a 70+ pound pit in her little townhouse and its an incredible dog. Always super friendly and very very loyal. Not to mention its very protective of her and her daughter. Theres a reason that people refer to pit bulls as a nanny breed, but just like every other dog they have to be trained by someone who isnt retarded and owned by someone who can give them the excercise, food, etc that derf mentioned.

I didnt mention shit. But since you bring it up:

I blame the owners. I know the neigborhood (here comes the racist in me), i grew up there, well the next neigborhood over anyway. Remember the crown heights riots of the early 90s? Its that neigborhood, and nothing has changed. Its a super low class neigborhood, the type of place you dont walk down the street unless you want to get robbed. The people that live there use the dog as a status symbol not a pet, the dog is a look at me toy, comparible to the way squids treat their sport bikes.

I would be wiling to make a very safe bet that the dog was trained to be vicious. For a very good description of what I believe the environment that this dog was living in please refer to any DMX song made "my dogs fight ruf ruf" "my dogs bite ruf ruf"
