Super-Sport-Touring Set Up
Last May when I did a weekend trip to Cedar Key, I ended up carrying a lot of stuff in a backpack, because my tank bag and tail bag didn't quite hold everything I wanted to bring. Well that was kind of pain and took a little of the enjoyment out of the trip. So since then I have been looking for some smallish saddlebags to make weekend trips easier.
Newenough had these Nelson Rigg mini saddlebags on sale for $69, so I picked them up. In typical Newenough style, they arrived almost before I could close the browser from ordering them. Upon trying them on for size however, I realized that while they could strap to the tag bracket in the back, I had nothing to secure them to in the front. I removed my passenger pegs long ago. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/c7e8e6e7.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/8c599eb9.jpg I dragged the passenger pegs back out and my husband spray painted them black so they wouldn't stand out like a sore thumb against the rest of the bike http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/b312e604.jpg Two coats of paint and one of clear later, we remounted them, and the bags could then be strapped down http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/ffbd2f6f.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/79c47139.jpg |
Got the bags on, now what can they hold? Here is all the stuff I successfully got in them:
Knox Cross Guard Knee Guard in their tote bag DSLR bag Skinnys Balaclava sweater pair of jeans hat wallet cosmetic bag Garmin Satnav Phone glasses case http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/6395da58.jpg Right side http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/bdf84470.jpg Left side http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/b0fc76f7.jpg Rain covers on http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/b2a9d381.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/2946983a.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/8e15499d.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...0/11dbb5e3.jpg |
And as the finishing touch, I added my tail bag to the mix. Found it was pretty easy to just tie it down to the same points the saddlebags are tied to. Then I rode to a friend's (across the county) and back to test it out. Stuck like glue. :)

Now I need another road trip to test it all out for real. Hopefully soon!

Is that techspec sharkskin on your tank? How do you like it? Does it ever move out of place?
|
It is Techspec, but I think it's the snakeskin pattern. It's been on for about 2 years now, and has never budged. They aren't as grippy as Stompgrip, but they do help. The stompgrip I had on my last bike started sliding around after a few seasons. I think the hot - cold - hot cycles killed the adhesive.

Great setup!
I would caution on one thing. Be sure you secure the rain covers somehow where they wont' come off. My Moto-Fizz bag from Aerostich had a drawstring for the rain cover as I recall, and the drawstring wasn't enough to hold it at 70mph. It literally lasted less than 10 minutes. I haven't woried about it, as by the design of the bag it is water resistant anyway, but just something to keep in mind. |
Very nice!
|
here is mine for comparison. The tank bag is a little huge to do any hardcore riding, because it flops around like a champ, but the tailbag is super secure.

That tail bag looks huge! I bet my tailbag would fit inside it! lol

I have the Same Tail bag as Derf...It hold an Assfuck amount of stuff...I feel it negates the need for saddle bags...It has side zippers on it that can hold the smaller things.
Def a good setup. This was my setup riding down to the Rally in 09' http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...y/DSC05196.jpg |
I have the NR tail bag and a medium tank bag. I want the NR saddlebags. The wifey and I will need them for two-up riding. Great review.
|
I saw a vertical tailbag that slides onto a metal frame that bolts onto your subframe. Easy on, easy off. Gonna have to find out more about it.

Yeah, over a metal tube hoop. Think it's from some UK or French co.

I'm still happy with the Sears hare case I bought last year. If worked out great last month when we rode to the Gap. $40 for the case and spare passenger seat...

I happen to think GSXr 750s make great sporttourers

Awesome! Did you have any model related issues I should be concerned about for very long trips? My bike worries me a bit because of the intermittent electrical problem (herky-jerky style issue) it has. Then last summer the reg-rectifier went bad on the Cherohala and fried my battery as far away from civilization & cell phone service as it was possible to get. So I am going to stick to in-state trips for a while to see how it does. But I would really love to do multi-state, in the East/SE US, and maybe eventually as far west as AR. |

I have never had a single issue with my bike. I believe Kerry did make an adjustment on it to prevent the "herky jerky issue" but I never experienced it. Maybe he could chime in to tell you what he did. Bike is comfortable for me to about 500-600miles per day. If I did those kind of miles regularly though I would get some bar risers. I have also thought about getting some kind of a rear seat mounted luggage rack...I have also seen hard bags on a GSXr and they looked AWESOME.
This is the craziest GSXr set up I have seen and owner says it handles great. |
^^^Well I've never seen that setup before!!^^^

Hard bags on a gixxer?

Omg, that looks terrifying, yet very cool at the same time. :tremble: :rockwoot: I really didn't mean to start a conversation about the issue my bike has. I have heard every remedy, and tried most of them. Nothing worked, until I finally got fed up and opened a ticket with American Suzuki. They worked with a local dealer where I brought my bike and final answer was yes they know it sucks, and it's not right, but that's the way they designed it, to get around it do this, kthxbai. Their solution is to let the bike sit running in neutral for at least a minute after starting to allow the ECU to get into the right program before taking off. The bike is under warranty but they won't replace the ECU because they refuse to admit there is anything truly wrong with it. F@ckers. This is one reason I have been leaning towards Kawasaki so heavily lately. |
