Sometimes you get the whale and sometimes the whale gets you.

I suspect its time to simply quit using whales in shows. obviously they dont enjoy it.

Captain Morgan 02-24-2010 10:27 PM

this whale has been involved in two other deaths. In one, the whale killed the person, but in the other, they simply found the person draped over the whale and think the guy had simply drowned. So, this makes three deaths involving this whale...is there a 3 strikes and your out rule at SeaWorld?

Think maybe its his way of saying, 'i'd rather be out there?'

Seriously? What do you do? You take an amazing predator out of the ocean (or wild in the case of grizzly's) and put it in a cage, from no crime of its own, you cant really complain it kills people. It may as well, its got the life sentence already...

We can only hope to be as crafty if/when our own governments start caging us up without reason

And this!!

I feel bad for the folks who saw it, and for those that loved her, but I gotta ask, what exactly has this poor whale been through? Rarely do animals attack unprovoked...body language, antagonism, poor training of a WILD creature. The fact that there were already 2 deaths attributed to this one tells me that they knew something was up with this poor critter. Time to rehab and retrain for the wild.

that is so wrong, and yet funny as hell. :lol

AquaPython 02-25-2010 09:06 AM

i was listening to bubba this morning and a guy came on with vader voice to talk about it. main points :
this whale is the biggest in captivity. 12000 lbs, not scared of shit.
it is used ONLY to breed with the females when they are in heat and to splash the audience.
he has killed 5 previous people, originally from canada. usually afterward they ship it to another park and give it another name.
everyone (staff) knows that this whale is very aggressive.
whenever the gates are open, bells and whistles are rung so that all trainers know that this aggressive whale is in the main tank, and to keep 3-5' away from the walls.

so basically , unfortunately, it was the trainers fault. she was on the dry dock platform talking to people and did not make the proper safety adjustments to get out or away from the tank. the whale slid up on the dock, bit her leg when she wasn't looking, and dragged her under. game over.

The point is that it is ironic and mindless for a motorcyclist to make fun of someone's death because they were taking a risk.

Everyone who lives a fun life does dangerous things. This trainer was one of their most experienced, had been doing this 16 years....some motorcyclists don't even live through their first month on the street, but when a fellow motorcyclist dies we don't say, "Well, dumbass had it coming, should've been driving an airbag laden SUV"

Some "dumbass" is usually the reason we know as much about the earth as we do, because they're willing to take chances and explore, despite a risk of death or injury. We shouldn't condemn or make fun of them, we should celebrate their efforts and mourn their passing. I know, I know, its the internet and guys have to look tough by making fun of dead people, I get it...its always been like that on forums. I'm just annoyed by a lack of independent and reasonable thought.

For the record, I don't think Killer Whales should be held in captivity unless they're not physically capable of surviving in the wild. It'd be like if people spent most of their waking time caged in a little cardboard cubicle staring at a screen....oh....wait....

EpyonXero 02-25-2010 12:13 PM

So what do you do with a whale like that? Im sure if you let him go he'll just start picking off Canadian fishermen.

That would be crueller then him killing handlers. The whale didnt do anything wrong.

He should be set free, not trapped in a bathtub. Maybe if he kills more, they'll get the picture.

I like dolphins a lot and don't see the need to capture them when in the wild they are friendly enough to humans so that you can go up to them anyways. I remember reading that there has only been 1 or 2 documented cases of a Killer Whale killing a human in the wild. I'd feel safe being in the ocean and seeing a killer whale or any other kind of dolphin.

Ya, you'd think it'd be common sense.

Hey, this animal is only about 50 times my size (mathematicly), why dont I just jump into an undersized tank and play with it?

Imagine if 50 Orca's decided to 'play' with a whalewatching boat?

I thought we established that Orcas don't like Canadians. Americans should be okay. Probably thanks to our navy ships dumping so much food into the ocean.

I've seen it before (infact posted in a thread a while back) but never saw the end where the seal was back up. I think in the Discovery version they did say they were training the young Orcas how to hunt. Very cool.

The coolest vid I've seen was where some Scuba divers for Discovery where below an ice pack with the Orcas and this one Orca had a grip on a seal and kept trying to give it to the Cameraman as a gift. It finally let go of the seal but was very neat to see how the Orca wanted to interact with the human.

Interesting story I heard at work the other day about dolphins is a guy's father was shot down in the ocean during the Korean war. He was safe in the ocean because Korea didn't have much of a navy but the land had troops. He was waiting for some American boats to come and then kept getting bumped by what he thought was a shark. It was actually a dolphin pushing him to shore. Of course the dolphin pushed him straight into enemy hands where he became a POW. He's not a fan of dolphins aparently.

Video of the killing here:

Not real graphic, just a lot of splashing around and screaming.

She went for quite a ride.

When the video ended, I thought, 'Reminds me of the 500gp days'...

Wow... that wasn't just "grabbed her and pulled her under." That whale messed around with her like a cat and mouse plaything situation....

lauralynne 03-05-2010 03:38 PM

where were the rodeo clowns? They needed those annoying distracting clowns - and how DO you stop a giant animal like that? Is it more traumatic for the audience to watch a human being killed or a whale getting shot? tough choice...all I can think of it a giant net at the bottom of everything that hoists everything in the pool up out of the water in an emergency...but I'm not sure even that would have helped (or if there IS such a contraption)

Man. that just sucks. I mean, it sucked before. But that puts a spin on it. No pun intended at all.

z06boy 03-05-2010 04:08 PM

He sure seemed able to tell when they were just about to save her and pull her out...he was having none of that .

Particle Man 03-05-2010 05:01 PM

man, that thing was like flopping all over her

the problem is the size of the orca.
They do have sensitive ears, maybe find a frequency that causes them distress, and play that underwater.

The thing is, what happens to a stressed/distessed Orca?

Its quite possible stress was what made him flip out on wetsuit girl.

True, but it also might make him flee. Sounds have different effects on different animals.

After watching that video, he was not playing with her. he intended to kill her.

I wonder what kind of gun you would have to use. I'm betting that dolphin skin isn't exactly thin, since it can withstand freezing cold waters.

They should hire some Eskimos to bounce the the Orcas. They get too rough, then we send in the snow mexican mafia.

Thats what I got out of it too. He seemed to be pissed off. But, at the same time, they are apparently very rough when they play with eachother, and they are very social. So its possible that maybe he considered her a friend, and thats his way of playing???

I honestly dont know, and I agree with you, it seemed like he intended to end her. But professionals say that this is how they play, almost like wrestling.
