Washington (CNN) -- Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has notified Congress of plans to allow women to serve aboard submarines, a Defense Department official said Tuesday.

Letters of intent were sent Monday to Congress, which has requested briefings on the matter, said the official, who asked not to be identified. There will be no vote on the matter in Congress.

The change was recommended by the chief of naval operations and the secretary of the Navy in addition to Gates, the official said, adding that there was no opposition to the move among Navy leaders.

A phased approach is being considered under which officers -- who already have separate living quarters -- would be the first to go co-ed, followed by crews, with the women bunking together, the official said. Crew space would have to be modified prior to that happening, the official added.

The submarines expected to carry women initially would be the larger ones -- nuclear-powered, missile-carrying submarines known as SSBN and SSGN, the official said.

Women joined the crews of the Navy's surface ships in 1993, but officials had previously cited limited privacy and the cost of reconfiguring the vessels in arguing against their joining sub crews.

Last September, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead described himself as "very comfortable addressing integrating women into the submarine force."

"Accommodations are a factor, but not insurmountable," he said.

I'm assuming there will be specific regulations about that.

There are specific regulations about that in (as far as I know) any unit where men and women serve together. From what I understand either the regulations are broken or there is an amazing amount of immaculate conception in deployed military units.

Either way, it'll give new meaning to "Dive! Dive!"

I totally dont even care, but what really bothers me is they are going to have to redsign the living quarters which will cost millions per ship. If they wanna start this then wait until the new ships are built with already design seperate sleeping arrangements.

aren't a lot of the old boats getting refitted anyhow? May as well update that while they're out of the water getting new elint gear...

I don't know about subs, but on aircraft carriers there is not much modification that needs to be done. There are enough separate berthing spaces that really just some training on what areas of the ship were off limits to the male personnel would be all that is needed.

I have always thought that is bullshit too. Female areas are off limits to men, but women can come into male areas any time they want...

OH, and we just sent a female E-6 home, as she is 5 months pregnant. They are saying it is her boyfriends (who is an E-4) and that it happened on pass before we left the states. It's REALLY close on the timeline.

Just make sure to stay out of Mariana's Trench....
