Usually it is a growl. Kawasakis over the last 10-15 years are especially known for lots of intake noise.

V8s rule! I have an old 454 that sounds like a B17 when it is droning along. Paradise.

And sitting in line up for a stock car race listening to 18-20 idling V8s is excitement squared.
